For Liverpool-based JMD Haulage, a strong and reliable relationship with the Port of Liverpool is central to the success of the business.

Founded in 1976, JMD – a family business – has grown to become one of the largest independent container hauliers in the region, working closely with many of the port’s customers and recently increasing volumes dramatically following the launch of the deep-water terminal at Liverpool. Founder, John Deveney is still involved in the business today and was also one of the co-founders of  Mersey Maritime.

JMD’s success has resulted in the business being awarded the Transport and Logistics Business of the Year at the Knowsley Business Awards.

With 30 years in the transport business, JMD’s transport director Alan Maguire shared his thoughts on why the haulage network in the North West is particularly strong.

We’ve been working closely with the Port of Liverpool for a number of years now, each year continuing to strengthen and grow our relationship. Today, approximately 85% of our business comes through the port, and over time we’ve built a detailed knowledge of not only the port operations but also the customers and the types of cargo passing through.

Indeed, over the past forty years we’ve build up a reputation for our capabilities when it comes to the types of cargo we can transport. To give an example, we’re one of just a few companies in the UK that hold a Section 5 Licence, enabling us to carry prohibited weapons and ammunition. This is only granted after approval by the Home Office following stringent security checks.

The success of the port is the success of JMD, and we have been heavily involved over the years, developing a good working relationship with the port. I myself was on the original steering group for the implementation of the Vehicle Booking System, which has in turn helped develop our business by improving turnaround times and reliability.

We service our customers through our own pool of 70 haulage HGVs and a network of five trusted subcontractors – which we’re aiming to grow in the coming year. As one of the first companies in the UK to be awarded a 5-star rating by the Eco Stars award scheme – which recognises outstanding efforts in the industry to reduce carbon footprints – we take our commitment to reducing our impact on the environment seriously. Our modern, clean fleets are managed efficiently and we aim to have all our trucks Euro 6 by early 2019 – recently investing over £800,000 in new trailers to further enhance the fleet. We also operate 10 under slung gen set trailers for a more efficient and safer way of transporting refrigerated cargo.

It’s important to us to not only make a positive difference to the environment, but also the community in which we operate. We draw from a pool of local talent, directly employing over 80 drivers, all from the surrounding community. We work in conjunction with Knowsley Council on a programme to train unemployed and unskilled people to become HGV drivers.  We also work closely with the military and employ many ex-services personnel, and were recently awarded with the Silver Corporate Covenant award for services in this field.

Operating in the North West has the distinct advantage of proximity between port and onward destination served through fantastic road links. Where you are potentially looking at weeks of lead-time from southern ports, it’s sitting at a maximum of two days at Liverpool, allowing us to reliably fulfil our services and continue to grow our business.
